Marie Rickard, like so many small business owners, loves what she does as the owner of Derma 180 Skin Renewal Center. Founded seven years ago, Derma 180, which is located on the West Side of Madison, specializes in anti-aging treatments, acne management and skin care products.
She was required to close her business March 20, and while she offered product sales with curbside pickup, the loss of in-person treatments has been devastating to her business. Unable to receive any aid, and without the backstop of another job, the situation has been dire. Business expenses go on and she still needed to pay rent, licenses, taxes and insurance bills.
“Even now I have a hard time sleeping at night because I worry how I can make it,” Marie said.
But last week, her perseverance paid off and she was able to reopen on a limited basis. And she reopened with a new appreciation of the joys she brings in improving people’s skin and the joy she takes from being a small business owner.
“During the shut down I realized how important family, true friends and my health really are,” she said. “I realized what is really important to me and why I wanted to start my own business in the first place, to have the freedom and flexibility to live the life I want.”
